Wedding celebrant questions | Billy Hodgetts

Straight answers on notices, vows, witnesses, travel and MC bookings with Billy Hodgetts.

Do we have to have a long ceremony?

No. The legal words take a few minutes. A full ceremony with a story, readings and vows is often 20 to 30 minutes. We decide the length together.

Can we write our own vows?

Yes. You can write them, we can write them together, or you can use the simple words. I will check that the legal line is still said.

What if one of us does not want to speak much?

Then we will not make you. A nod, a short line, or words I speak for you are all fine.

When do we lodge the Notice of Intended Marriage?

At least one month before the wedding, with me. Bring the ID I ask for. If a divorce or a death certificate is needed, that can take longer. Tell me early.

How many witnesses?

Two, both over 18. They do not have to be Australian.

Do you travel?

Yes. I am based in Deniliquin and work across rural NSW and VIC. Travel outside my included area is quoted first.

Can you MC as well?

Yes. Ceremony only, MC only, or both.

Will you marry us at our house?

If the place is a legal place for a marriage and we can do the paperwork properly, yes. A backyard counts.

What if we are already married and want a ceremony here?

That is a commitment ceremony or a renewal, not a second legal marriage. I can still write it and lead it. It will not produce another certificate.

Do you do namings and funerals?

Ask. Namings, yes, when the diary allows. Funerals, only if I am the right person for that family. I will not take one I cannot do properly.
